I'm interested in anyones input on converting my '85 Yamaha 220 O/B to 50:1 (???) mixture rather than using the remote oil tank with oil pump. The reason for the conversion is that the oil pump is on it's way out and a new one is going to run me about $300....OUCH !!!

Here's what info I'm hoping to gain from you guys:

What is the process of the conversion?

How hard is it to do it myself? (I'm fairly mechanically inclined)

What are the advantages/disadvantages to mixture rather than the remote tank?

Thanks,

Saltymut

Thought I would try to catch some of you night owls. It seems as if my post stumped those early birds. Any ideas?

Re: Converting to Gas/Oil mixture

Hey Saltymut
I want to do the same with my 1985 Merc 150. Local Merc dealer sold me a plug to put into the block after removing the pump. They said just take it all off and insert plug. Sounds too easy don't it?

Re: Converting to Gas/Oil mixture

Yes it does !!!! I've searching these message boards for anybody that's done it, and I've run across several that made comments about Yamaha's carbs being ahead of the oil / fuel mix injectors, and to manually mix the two would foul up my carb. This doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me, but I guess I'll end up making a run down to the Yamaha dealer to talk to a pro. I appreciate the input, but I hope somebody else reads this and has some more info.

Re: Converting to Gas/Oil mixture

You asked for the advantages, and disadvantages of going premix. I do not know about your yamaha, but with my 40hp johnson, it was very simple and easy to convert. :D
Disadvantages
1)= NONE :D
Advantages are
1)= perfect mix everytime (peace of mind, no worrying is it getting lubbed) :D
2)= no beep, beep, beep everytime I slow to idle for more than 10 seconds :D
3)= less maintenence, and wasted oil when cleaning oil tank and filling with fresh oil :D
4)= no worrying about mixing different brands of oil in oil tank :D
5)= freeing up room and clutter of oil tank and hose/wires in small 14' boat. I am a much happier fisherman/boater since converting, and defy anyone to give me a disadvantage. :D :D
