Can anyone tell me what problems I will encounter changing an Evinrude 9.9hp from long shaft to short shaft especially any problems with the exhaust?

Thanks Alan5505

There have been many posts in these forums about just that thing, try searching for long to short shaft conversion.

Welcome to iboats Alan!

The only problem you may run into is shortening the water tube to the motor if it dosen't have the extension tube. Other than that, just replace the driveshaft and shift rod with the short shaft versions, take out the midsection extension and install the lower unit. No need to worry about the exhaust.

I'm curious OBJ, if the water tube doesnt have the extension tube, is it possible to cut it or replace the tube? For my own knowledge is why i ask.

Yes Ranger, it is. Can't quote the exact length to cut off, but that's all ya' do. I use a dremmel tool with a cut off disc. To replace the whole tube would mean pulling the power head.

good to know. Not being sure what the tube looks like, is there a flange on it that would have to be flared out after cutting? I imagine all this would be helpful to alan, unless he already knows in which case he is a step in front of me!

Nope, no flange. but I take a file and chamfer the edges of the tube to remove any burrs and lose bits. It also slides into the impeller housing gromet with less chance of catching and bending over the gromet.

Ranger01,
Measure the exact height of the extension section (should be 5-inches) and remove exactly that much from the water tube. The water tube is copper tubing - nothing fancy about it.
Be careful when removing the shift rod, as the yoke it threads into is moveable fore and aft and can move out of the way. If it does move, some gently leaning forward or backwards of the gearcase should jostle it back into place so you can thread the shorter rod into it.
Also, this is a good time to replace the waterpump impeller as you'll have to remove that to change out the driveshaft.
Be sure to grease the splines on the crankshaft end of the driveshaft before reassembly to the motor...

- Scott
