I have a 1993 90 hp 2 stroke evinrude that is remote steering. I want to convert it to tiller steering. Any information would be very helpfull.. I was told buy a company that sells evinrude outboard tiller handles thats a handle is not availible for my engine?? But I have talked to a couple people that have told me that a certain suzukie handle converts very easily. and u only need to drill one whole to make it work. The problem is i cant remeber the model # of the suzukie he told me?? Ive also been told a yamaha handle can be converted to work on my engine.. Any information or instructions on this would be much appreciated...

I dont think the Yammy and Zuki parts will interchange, but the tiller handle kits listed are only for 60 degree engines(2 stroke)

i think you need your head examined. i can't imagine trying to hold that torque.

I agree with others' statements about it being a bit crazy. I have a 55hp 2cyl Johnson that's a tiller, and the handle has broken twice on my now. I'm in the process of converting it from tiller to remote, because I'm tired of breaking handles. I would definitely not recommend putting a tiller on a 90hp.

Make the Tiller handle about 6 feet long that way you can get enough people on it to steer the boat.

I'm bumping this for more info....

If nothing becomes available I'm going to try using a smaller tiller setup from say a 50hp, on a 70-115....

I can always just deal with it for a season or two, and then get the hydraulic power steering setup for tiller engines.

Re: Converting 90 hp evinrude to tiller steering

If the motor is well balanced and setup is right, there should be no problem steering it. I see no reason at all to why the tiller handle should break, and I have seen people with 90HP and stick steering now and then. Handling the boat at speed, with that much power, sitting with the tiller and getting throwed around, is something different, and I guess the reason that most people, my self included, prefer remote steering. Earlier, OMC made tiller handle sets for as well 40-70 as 90, but i guess the very small demand for this setup was reason they were discontinued. I believe an earlier set, of the type that bolts to the stering arm should fit yours too. Look on e-bay.

Re: Converting 90 hp evinrude to tiller steering

I hope that a tiller setup for say a 50 HP will work on a 80-115 engine. Like I mentioned I only need to use it that way for a couple years. After that I could buy one of the power steering setups.

I'm thinking a trim tab on the skeg like the HP boaters use might reduce some of the torque when steering a tiller engine.

Like this.

I would defer to TD's wisdom on this issue...the largest tiller outboard that I've seen is a 60hp Merc...and most folks thought that was a bit crazy too.:)

I've seen up to 250 hp tillers.

But those are with power steering.

I've seen plenty of 75-115's though. The power steering setups are really sweet!

I had a 40hp tiller and that's too much power in your hand. I couldn't imagine a 90hp in your hand. Plan on swimming is all I can say.

Make sure you rig up a kill lanyard for that thing when you convert it. You gun that thing by accident in a turn and you are out of the boat! And you have a 90 horse monster circling you without a kill lanyard.
