Ah something I can answer instead of asking all the questions!
Yes, you need a steering cable, helm, and a wheel, they usually come as a complete kit, and a bracket to connect the cable to your particular motor. You'll also need a throttle/shift cable and a control box of course.
I just finished connecting mine up using the old-fashioned closed loop "washing line" system, but you'll probably want to go for the more modern single cable "teleflex" type. It's dead easy to do.

Zorro, I assume you are going to hook this up on a boat with a console? If you already have a boat with a control box, cables, and steering wheel it shouldn't be too bad.

I recently called Mercury about the same thing (8hp 4-stroke) before I bought a Nissan for my '84 basstracker with console. There should be a kit available (mine would have been $100) that will allow you to hook up controls. They even can get you hooked up with electric start etc...

The bigger factor will be all the parts you'll need to hook up steering, throttle and shifter if you don't have compatible items. I know as I just went through all of this. While the Nissan I bought luckily had the control box and cables I still needed to fasten them to the motor, (custom) get steering linkage ($100), and a motor mount and even then there was some custom fabrication.

First step...call Mercury - visit their website for a 1-800 number.
