Conversion to short shaft Johnson Seahorse 521

Have tried to remove the lower unit, spoke to Twin City Outboards and have an offer on short shaft, shift shaft and the like, but what I thought was an extension of the main shaft (4 screws and 1 bolt at the bottom to the lower unit and same connection to the upper foot, approx. 12 inches 'high') seams not to be removable from the main shaft ... although unbolted. Do I need to apply more force (the assembly has been repainted altogether at least once), or is there anything I should know before I destroy something?

Re: Conversion to short shaft Johnson Seahorse 521

Without knowing the year and horsepower and mainly to get this bumped back up to the top since no one has replied yet I going to say that a lot of times the shaft gets stuck where it goes into the powerhead. Shoot it with some PBblaster and let it soak in. Some models also had another bolt in the middle if I remember. Sometimes my remembery isn't all that good but an OEM manual will explain everything for the cost of 1/2 hour in the shop.
