hey guys!!!!! long time since I've posted. I have a 1998 MonArch SunSpa 260 pontoon with a 1988 Force 125 hp outboard. Model number 1254x8A. we have only had this pontoon 2 summers. Does anybody have a part number for control cables for this motor? The cables that are on my motor currently are Teleflex CC17222. I've had stiff shifting issues into forwardand reverse and then this last summer, i had intermittent shifting into reverse issues. Only into reverse. would grind a bit then go in. I can disconnect the cable at motor and manually operate the shift lever under the motor hood and i have to move it all the way forward before it will go into reverse. if cable is hooked up, the arm is roughly 1/2" shy of going into reverse.

I am trying to figure out if my problem is the cables or issue in lower unit.

any help would be appreciated.

also, if the lower unit is boogered up and i gotta swap it out, does anybody know if there is a 2:1 gear ratio lower unit? i am led to believe there is but im verifying.

are there other lower units that i could use to maybe use the bigger props from a mercury so i can maybe prop this motor down so i can get it into its recommended power band?

Sound your issue is in the LU as you have to move the shift lever all way forward to get it in reverse.
The shift shaft lower is threaded in to the shifting fork in the LU.
I have to check in my workshop manual to be sure but I think the shift shaft lower should be turned all way in to the shifting fork and then back out 4 turns. That should be the bas adjustment.
To adjust it properly you have to check that the traveling length of the shift shaft lower is equal for both forward and reverse when remote cables are hooked up.
With the cable unhooked, shift the LU manually into forward and mark with a pencil at the shift shaft lower against the LU casting where the shaft goes into the LU. Do this for forward/neutral/reverse, hook the cable up and check it when shifting with the remote control.
If it do not line up with the marks in forward/neutral/reverse you have to adjust the cable at the coupling.

I think there were three different gear ratios.
1,73:1, 1,93:1 and 2:1.
It is easy to check what ratio you have.
With the spark plugs out and the LU in gear you turn the flywheel by hand and check how far the prop goes when turning the flywheel.
2:1 the prop turns one turn when the flywheel turns two.
1,93:1 the prop turns 93% of a turn when flywheel turns two.
1,73:1 the prop turns 73% of a turn when the flywheel turns two.
