Is there a way to give a 1989 force 125 some throttle without putting her in gear? Seems I can only get the engine to crank if the throttle lever is dead center if not nothing. Once started I then push the button in and edege it forward it seems like it goes right into gear no noise very smooth. Shuld there be a zone where you can rev the engine without it going in gear? Should you be able to start the engine with some throotle applied if you choose? Great board Great help..

Re: Control unit Throttle

Most if not all control units have a mechanism to increase throttle without shifting. Exactly how, depends on the control unit.
There is a neutral safety switch that allows engine to start only in neutral.

The quicksilver Commander 3000, you push in a button at the base of the shifter, then push shifter forward.

Others have a fast idle lever that is lifted.

What type of controls do you have?

the boat is a 1989 Bayliner Capri 19' the controler says U.S Marine has trim up - down on the handle and a black button you pull up to move the lever, there is no fast idle lever. Seems strange how do I get a fast idle then?

Re: Control unit Throttle

not sure how similar your force is to my 45hp chrysler. On mine there is a cam that goes to the carb to control how open the shutter is. When throttle is closed the shutter should be closed. When you move the throttle while in neutral it can only go about 1/3 up towards full throttle and will go no more. The shutter in the carb should open a little. If you are able to verifiy the carb shutter is opening a little bit and you are unable to achieve a decent Idle you may need your fuel pump and or carb rebuilt. If you need to maintain a high idle in order to go to forward or reverse gear you could damage the shift linkage in your lower unit.

Re: Control unit Throttle

Look at the point where your shift lever pivots. You may find that its not just a plastic cover in the center, its actually a big round button. Holding this button in while you select forward and throttle up allows you to use throttle without engaging gears. Thats how I always start my Force -- threequarters throttle, a touch of choke, she always fires right up, and I then throttle back to a fast idle until she warms up. To get back to normal operations, simply put her back into neutral, and its all as normal from there.

Some older controls, the whole of the shift lever assembly pulls out sideways to achieve the same result.

hope this helps,

Bill

Re: Control unit Throttle

Hi U
The previous post are correct. All outboard controls have a feature for fast idle or warm-up. Yours is either a button in the pivot or the whole lever is pulled sideways. The important part of useing this feature during starting is not so much added throtle (because it will not open the throtle that much) but it sets the timing to the proper place for easy starting. Back when they manualy started cars and motor cycles, setting the timing and choke, etc was all part of the procedure. Now days the car does all that for us. Outboards are getting to this point now and fast.

You probably have the same remote as me (MORSE CONTROLS). Simply pull the lever outwards, and you notice it can the freely move forward or backward. To get it back to neutral, and engage, simply move it to center, and it should 'click'. There will be able to go on your merry way.

I found it, yes it has a pull system that say's pull for nuteral. I can not belive it took me one week and may headaches to figure this out and start my boat. I have a few other posts and am in the process of fixing a few more items. Thank you all for your help..

Re: Control unit Throttle

Thought I might add, when starting your motor, 3/4 throttle, turn the key with a touch of choke, and it should fire like a dream. The idiot (previous owner) of my boat kept using starting fluid....in a 2stroke. Now I know why I have damaged pistons.
