I have just finished getting a Merc 1150 running and took it out for some fine tuning on the water. (Just got the boat from sitting in a field a few years) The guy said he couldn't get it running after numerous new parts, except wires and new cap. I changed those and put the flywheel on the correct way to synvh it and it started right up.
When I shifted forward it went into reverse. It did go fine but it is really awkward and unsafe to drive this way. I have banged my head on the wall over this and can't get it figured out. I think I may be getting close when I took the control box out. When I shift forward, the cable pushes the tranny into reverse. It moves the triangle thing back. And of coarse when I pull back on the control, It pulls the triangle thing forward and goes into forward gear. It goes through the gears fine, but not correctly.
I am thinking maybe the control box was changed? It sure looks like it has been in there a long time though. It is a 1989 Bass Tracker 1800fs and one that is an inside mount. I was thinking the gears cam might be in the wrong position but if the control box went the correct way and pulled the cable when pushed forward it would work.
Does this sound like a good diagnoses or is there something I can do. I believe the triangle connection thing is supposed to be in the front of the motor when in forward and towards the transom in reverse right? If he connection position is towards the front, (reverse), the cam in the leg may have been turned to the wring position right? I am trying to hold back on removing the leg to see whats up. I know the previous owner had it off and replaced the water pump impeller. The shift cable moves first and throttle open fine, Its just all backwards. You wouldn't think the previous owner drove it like this do you?
So I am going yo look for a control box here and see if they have push or pull options. Mine is a Morse Incom.
If thee are any opinions or ideas out there, I'd sure appreciate the response.
