Control Cable very stiff.

I have an older 1964 Mercury 650 65hp and it runs great. I have disconnected the control cables and they work smoothly without being hooked up, the motor shifts very well, but I am concerned about the amount of effort required to move the control in and out of gear. Once in gear it moves very smoothly and throttles easily. Is this normal for this age of motor. Or is there a way of lubing the cable or should I be ? Advice appreciated.

From what you are describing, it appears that your control box may be in need of some lubrication.

Thanks Djohns,

Is this something that is done by removing the cover. Also would I use a dry type lube like graphite or an oil ?

OhNo,

Yes, you would remove the control box cover. It's easier if you detach it from the boat first.

Seperate it very slowly and carefully. Take note of how it goes back together. Do not move the lever, while it's apart.

Any grease is OK. White Lithium would be the best.
