Control cable routing

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction, I'm currently restoring a boat with a 60hp Mariner outboard, I'm at the stage of wiring and cable routing, can someone tell me if the throttle/gear selection cable should exit the boat through the middle of the transom or from the side. The PO had it coming through the centre and then curving to the RHS of the boat and then running up the boat side. But it might be better to keep the cable running down the RHS and exit the transom on the right and across to the engine. Is there a right/wrong way. I see some say to loop the cable at the centre to avoid kinks. I just want to get it right so will appreciate any tips.

Generally the control cables run down the side where the control is mounted (usually starboard), out into the splashwell from that same side and then do a curve to the port side of the motor.

This allows the curve of the control cables to bend a bit or straighten, as the motor pivots for steering.
