Sorry to be digging up an old thread, but does anyone have any tips on getting the bottom to unhinge? Does it have to be pushed in towards the motor, out towards the cowl, down towards the lower unit? I've been playing with it for awhile and can't get it to unhinge. Thanks in advance.

Moved from an old thread. Give some details about your Merc.

Appreciate it. I have a Mercury 850 4 cylinder that I believe is a 1973. Having trouble getting the cable barrels loose, don't get how the latch unhinges off the bottom. I have a couple ways I'm going to try when I get home today but any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The two ears on the inside swing in, up and around toward the outside of the motor. It locks in place, so maybe you have to push down on the ears a bit.

Push both cables toward the powerhead while pulling the clamp out and up.
