Control cable question

I have another question about the control cable on my Merc 1250. Is the cable to long if someone made a couple of loops under the splashwell? I believe it to be, but maybe not. I am going to replace it but was just wondering how to figure how long I need it?

There is a formula for the cable length you need. Look in the catalogs for Westmarine and BoatUS for the formula. I am not sure, but I think you need to measure from the MerControl to the motor, and the gunwale to the centerline of the motor and then add a foot.

On my 16' Avenger, I think I use 12' cables. This gives me about 75% of a loop in the cable before it hits the motor.
