I bought a new radio and when I went to put it in the plug did not match and I had no good wiring diagram. I am taking the boat to a radio installation professional (like I should have done in the first place), but I now I have cut the old plug and have loose wires and when I turn the key I get a constant tone so I assume I screwed something up. any ideas?

I disagree with taking it to a "radio installation professional" first.. as that's what these forums are for. All you had to do is ask.

To install a stereo head unit, all you need is a test light. Instead of going crazy and cutting off entire connectors, all you had to do is track down constant and switched 12V+ plus your speaker wires. That's it. Most likely, there was some kind of jumping action going on within the plug that supplied a sense wire with 12V+ and now that the plug is gone along with the jumping, you're getting an alarm.

This is also why when you cut an entire plug off that you're not 100% sure of that you leave at least 1/2" - 1" of scrap wire on both ends to reconnect it just in case of situations like this. Then again, I sure as heck don't cut plugs off until I'm 110% sure of what I'm doing :D

Live and learn!

Re: Continuous alarm when I turn key after unsuccessful new radio install

Hey guys I went ahead and had the radio installed by someone who new more than I and I feel better about that...but here is the deal now. When I turn the key one click the alarm still sounds but once I start it the alarm goes away. Here lies the problem, the radio works and the alarm goes away once started but the radio does not work unless I turn the key to the starting position(which is where the alarm tone sounds). so my question is should the radio work without the key being turned at all?, because it is no fun trying to listen to the radio, with the motor off but the tone going on?

sorry so winded

Re: Continuous alarm when I turn key after unsuccessful new radio install

normally, you have a radio installed with a switch (flat type toggle) that would turn it on (and off when not being used). The auto installer figured it was like a car, and installed it on the key switch.

As you turn a boat on, there is about a 30 second delay, then it reads the oil pressure, if no pressure, the alarm sounds.

Find the wire that is attached to the switch, wire it to a switch (or you could wire it to be hot all the time behind your master battery switch) and you should be good to go.

take and post pictures if you need help figuring it out.
