Connecting a Hand held Tacho

How would you attach a hald held tacho to a pull start 20HP Johnson 1997 model.
I have the old analog tacho with a positive and negative leads.

Not knowing what you have, I would say it is a safe bet it won't work. Probably for an old car with points and condenser, right?

The only thing that is going to work on your motor is an inductive tach. It has a clamp or wrap of wire that goes around a spark plug wire.

Yes, it is an old style tach. that is used on the older cars with points and condensor.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, points and condensers are a thing of the past. Depending on how you look at it.

Anyhow, that tach isn't going to work on it.
