Hi everyone I’m new to this and I’m probably beating a dead horse on this subject but I’m from red deer Alberta Canada and I’m rebuilding a 1978 15Ft Rinker open bow boat with a 80hp mercury my question is can I use western redwood cedar for the kneal board and stringers and resining and fibreglassing them in? And the transom board can I also use 2 3/4 inch outdoor fir plywood and covering it with resin and fibreglass it in or do I have to use marine grade plywood?

I am not sure how cedar will work with poly resin. It may be oily. If you seal the fir up well (which is paramount), any regular wood will do. You do not need the properties of cedar. This is an '85 boat, so I would use any fir I can find. for the stringers and frames. The decking will be a bit better if you dry some 1/2" pressure treated plywood and use it. Screw it in (SS screws) to the stringers, and cover it with some 2 layers of cloth and resin.

Not all of us are too enthusiastic about using PT wood in boat construction. In addition to the problems with PT plywood and lumber requiring extensively long drying times before it can be glassed, I worry that if it does get wet in the future, it may leach chemicals that could be corrosive to other parts of the boat. Not saying PT wood won't work, but it has baggage...

Properly encapsulated exterior grade plywood (e.g., ACX, BCX) will most last longer than your ownership of the boat and it has none of the potential downsides of PT products.
