I have a 1971 50hp Evinrude with serial # E07812 Model # 50173S. It is an inline 2 cylinder. When I am researching parts and whatever else, I keep running into references to a 3 cylinder 50hp and a v4 50 hp. Normally when I find a reference to one of these I cannot find the part or procedure for a 2 cylinder 50hp Evinrude. Do I have a 50hp powerhead or has someone changed it. The engine cover says LARK on the back side. I bought this as a used boat and motor and I havn't quite got all the ins and out on outboards figured out yet.

Re: Confused about 50hp Evinrude.

You've most certainly got a 50. OMC manufactured 50 hp (and other hp levels as well) in different configurations at different periods of time. The 50 hp four cylinder was OMC's first V-4 outboard and was a "hoss" albeit a thirsty one. I'm not sure of the time periods, but I think the 3 cylinder 50 was/is a derated 60 and your 50 is an extension of the 2 cylinder 40's.
Just make sure your model number, and serial number if necessary, match the information you're looking at and you'll be OK.
Bill......
