Every so often I click on a link, while on the internet, and my computer just shuts off and restarts. It then goes thru the disc check routine while restarting.

This just started happening about a week ago and has occured 5 or 6 times. Any ideas as to what is going on???? I'm running XP Pro.

Hey Boom -

Can you give an example of the link you're clicking on?

js, the latest one was a link to an online catalogue within a ski apparel website.

ggoody, that's what I thought. I've run both plus TrendMicro anti virus and all is clean.

I'm thinking spyware...specifically a data miner.

Download Adaware and run it. I run Adaware, Trend Mico's PC-cillin, and Spybot (also free). between the three everything gets caught ... that I know of.

Thanks all, I'm waiting to see if the problem is resolved. I had been using a now expired trial version of trendmicro anti virus. I just signed up for the whole program and ran their spyware program. It found one that Spybot did not. (websearch.a????)

Prior to running it, I also had a usb icon, showing installed drives that were not installed. Now that indicator is gone. I'll play around on the net and see what happens. The shutdown/restart was becoming more frequent so if it's not fixed it will show quickly.

Negative SnC. The good news is that he has not come back asking for more money. The bad news is that I don't think this fits the old rule that 'no news is good news'.

Monday will be the end of two weeks since I engaged him. I will give him a call if I don't hear from him first. I never really pressed for a timeline and I suspect that these things happen in little bits and pieces, if they're gonna happen at all.

A little irony on the boat issue is that last week I just finished putting up the canopy roof (costco purchase) over the boat. The first time in it's 30 years its been under a roof....and now with no motor. Grrrrrrrrr!!

I apparently have this virus. "JAVA_BYTEVER.A". It is probably the cause of my problem.
Trendmicro has a special 'pattern file' to deal with it. So when the sun has quit shining (a rarity here in the PNW) I will study up on the issue and deal with it.

I think my problem may have been due to a 'battle of the pop-up stoppers'. Only time will tell.

I have been using Panicware Pop-up Stopper and I just discovered that IE 6.0 also now has a popup blocker. I think it is new and must have come on an MS update.

Anyway, both were turned on. I just turned off the IE version and so far I've had no reboots when I either click on a new link or hit the 'back' button. This rebooting, while on the internet, was getting to be a real pain. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

How did you activate it? I can't find it.

Aldo

With IE open, click on tools and IE's 'popup blocker' should be the second line. If you put your cursor on it, it displays the option to turn it on or off.

I use IE popup stopper and Pop-Up Stopper with no problems. I think the IE stopper is in IE 6 SP2.
