I just updated my tower with a new HP tower I picked up. I bought it a while back but finally got around to switching it out with the old one.

The switch went very well, got my files transferred, etc.

So, yesterday, I went to use the computer and it won't start. Pardon me if my terminology is wrong...
the computer is on, i never turn it off unless we go out of town for a while. It is in some sort of sleep mode until I click the mouse. It then comes alive, I hear it humm, and a pretty picture of some mountains comes on the screen. but that's where it stops. Before, some other stuff would also come on the screen, date and time, etc. I just would click the mouse again and it would open a new screen asking for my PIN.

So, now, I can't even get to the PIN screen. While it is stuck on the opening screen, the mouse pointer is there and I can move it around. The date and time do not appear. I can turn off the computer using the button on the front of the tower but that doesn't help. I turned it off and unplugged it for a while, but still does the same thing.

Any help?

Something is corrupt and its hung. Hold the power button until it turns off. Then turn it back on.

In that case its do over time, wipe and reinstall
One of the programs is either not installing correctly or not compatible with the computer hardware or OS. Verify SW

got it running again. called my old computer guy, he helped me over the phone, no charge. this was the wake up procedure:
without turning it off, unplug. then hold the power button for 10 sec to drain off any remaining "juice". plug back in, hit the power button, works!
he thinks it may have been some download or update that hung it up.
working now for 36 hours, fingers crossed. super nice nice guy, promised him the "good guy discount" on the next remodeling job.
