A month ago changed from dsl to cable. At the same time bought a new computer. When I started to use the computer tried downloading everything no problem very fast downloads. But from the get go the browser, which is internet explore, sometimes takes forever to load pages. This is not a radom thing I would have to say it happens more then not. I've tried clearing the cookies and reseting the default settings no luck. Even installed firefox to see if a new browser would be any different no luck. Wanted to know if any one has had similar problems or had any ideals on things to try.

Do you have a router connected? Are you running any kind of firewall software to include a virus/trojan scanner?

When I first hooked the computer up I did try and install a router. That caused more problems then was worth. The lab top took like 2min to open a page. I'm running mcafree plus the fire wall in xp.

Thinking I should turn both off and try, with my luck though would end with a computer full of junk.

If everything on your home system checks out, I would call your ISP. Sometimes thay will throttle back your connection if they find that you are not a heavy user or if you use bit torrent for example. Bell in Ontario has openly come out and stated that they do that inorder to help combat P2P file sharing ie. music.

Get rid of Norton or Mcafee antivirus software which ever one you have.<br /><br />Download AVG antivirus it's free and works real good.

tried the system scan found two worms removed them, rescaned checked out ok. Still slow, PB your saying AVG is good?

Colorado04, I can down load fast just can't surf fast. Most of my time is spent surffing so becoming a pain in the butt.

A maximum transmission unit (MTU) is the largest size packet or frame, specified in octets (eight-bit bytes), that can be sent in a packet- or frame-based network such as the Internet. The Internet's Transmission Control Protocol uses the MTU to determine the maximum size of each packet in any transmission. Too large an MTU size may mean retransmissions if the packet encounters a router that can't handle that large a packet. Too small an MTU size means relatively more header overhead and more acknowledgements that have to be sent and handled. Most computer operating systems provide a default MTU value that is suitable for most users. In general, Internet users should follow the advice of their Internet service provider (ISP) about whether to change the default value and what to change it to.<br /><br />In Windows 95, the default MTU was 1500 octets (eight-bit bytes), partly because this is the Ethernet standard MTU. The Internet de facto standard MTU is 576, but ISPs often suggest using 1500. If you frequently access Web sites that encounter routers with an MTU size of 576, you may want to change to that size. (Apparently some users find that changing the setting to 576 improves performance and others do not find any improvement.) The minimum value that an MTU can be set to is 68.<br /><br />For more recent Windows systems, the operating system is able to sense whether your connection should use 1500 or 576 and select the appropriate MTU for the connection.<br /><br />For protocols other than TCP, different MTU sizes may apply.
