Hi All,
I'm looking for my first boat for the son and I to do some fishing with. I have been reading on this board about things to look for in a boat. Motor Compression is a big issue so, My questions are:
Will a compression tester for a car work for a boat motor?
Will different brands of boat motors have different compressions?
What should the compression be for a good boat motor?
Thanks for any and all info.... Howdy, Springer. A good outboard motor will give compression for all cylinders within 5-10# of each other. The total numbers aren't very important, so long as they are above 100-110#.

The easiest to use for accurate readings are the compression guages that screw in to the spark plug holes.

Good luck.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Just to add to J.B.'s input: Don't buy the cheapest tester available, try to balance cost vs. quality. I've seen cheap-o testers that leak, have sticky release valves, etc. Get a decent one. They are the stethoscope of motors and will save you a lot of heartache (and maybe ca$h) down the road.

YES THEY WELL WORK FINE.
100 TO 140 PSI.
NO MORE DIFFERENCT OF 10% FROM THE HIGH TO
THE LOW.
EXAMPLE: 100PSI LOW NO MORE THAN 110 ON THE
HIGH.
MAYBE A LITTLE MORE BUT THAT IT.

Re: Compression tester for Boat motors?

I recently ran compression checks on one of my motors and used two different testers with two different readings, one tester showed 115 for all cylinders and the other 135. There was no difference between cylinders with either tester but one was 20 lbs higher. Be sure to have your compression tester checked out.

Keep the bait in the Slick...
