Hi,
I am looking at buying a '75 Merc 150. The owner said that the guy he bought it from said it needs a stator, so he has never had it running. He has already removed the starter, flywheel and stator. Before I make an offer, I wanted to check the compression. Without putting it all back together, can I check the compression? Will just turning it over by hand give an accurate reading?

Thanks,
Keith

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking the fella will take $150.00 for the motor w/ power trim and controls. It has a 25" leg, but I still think it a good deal.

Keith

25" leg? Ain't seen that one yet?

I've personally tried (for the hell of it only) to done a test by hand on a similar motor (inline 900). I ain't no Hulk Hogan but not peewee either - and best I could get was 90 on the best cyl. Starter gets 145. But without a flywheel you can't even do that.
--But if you got the pieces there, you can snug up the flywheel and do a leak down test if you got the equipment.

Otherwise- I'd just buy cus you can easily part it out and make money on that $150. If trim pump works that will go for min of $50.

Buy that motor regardless of compression, if you can get it for 150.

call me crazy, but you can use and AIR wrench hooked with a socket to the flywheel bolt or mabey even an impact wrench to get it to spin,

hell even try a drill rigged up some how to spin the nut, set it a slow gear and spin away
