I would like to do a compression test and am wondering, if I don't connect the kill switch I will have no spark. Do I still have to ground the plug wires?

Just jumper the yellow/red wire on the starter solenoid to the large red cable on the solenoid. Leave the ign off and the plugs do not need to be grounded.

Disconnecting the kill switch ALLOWS the ignition system to fire the plugs.

Hey Doug,

While of course you're correct, I'm wondering if the OP didn't mean that he was leaving the lanyard off, which would result in the ignition being disabled.

If that's the case, fixmyrude, as long as you verify that pulling the kill switch actually shuts down the engine, in my opinion you're good to go.

Yes, by disconnecting the kill switch I am refering to pulling the lanyard so as to make the engine crank yet not start. Is this a safe way to do a compression test. Sure seems like the easiest.

In my opinion, yes, if you've verified that the safety lanyard shuts the engine off. (It's what I do).
