My insurance agent requested a survey from the dealer the boat(19ft Regal 1988 sebring cuddy) was surveyed in July. All the cosmetic and electrical stuff was in good condition but the survey showed compression of 160 / 155/150/ 150/130/110 on a mercruiser 4.3l stern drive the engine. what does it mean and is this boat a bad buy? regals are known to be good boats but this sounds like a great boat with a bad engine.

what's your opinion?

Russell

Needs a valve job, headgasket or both. Did selling dealer do survey?

thanks Clayton, yes the dealer had survey done but never showed it to me, all he showed me was the work ticket which incudes battery service, new starter, 500.00 worth of teak conditioning and a new radio. They had to send a statement of condition of the vessel top my insurance agent who faxed me a copy. A top end ( valve) job on a boat could run anywhere from 200.00( gasket replacement) to 2000.00 ( valve job) What does it mean on a survey that the oil quality is poor? Is that a sign of excessive wear or that is just due for an oil change?

Probley never changed oil and may have water from headgasket or exhaust manifolds. If you dont own boat yet, keep looking or make a big price adjustment. Need to check gear oil and u-joints also.
