i recently replaced my carburetors and intake manifolds on my Volvo penta 4.3l gl twin engines - i was having trouble setting base timing so i took the boat to my mechanic he set the timing then took boat for a lake test. he was unable to get the boat to plain at all on his test. the boat is large it is a regal 2760 express cruiser it has twin 4.3 Volvo's.
i added the bigger carbs to try to get a little more power at the start - but it seems to have done the opposite. the guy is puzzled because after i put the carbs on i set the timing close and took the boat around the lake with no problems -- but it was a little more sluggish then it was previously so i brought it in to make sure the timing is exact. my mechanic set the timing at 1 degree before tdc. i was shooting for 6 degrees when i set it . does it make that much difference that now it wont plain at all?
he did a compression test just to make sure all was good
my starboard motor is new and all had exactly the same 160 to 161 psi
the port engine had cylinder 1 =155 2=159 3=160 here is what puzzles me the other side had a lot more 2= 190 4=185 6=185
he thinks it might be because of the low compression on 1 side.
my boat is prob lay under powered if both engines aren't working efficiently it will not get on plain .
any ideas?
i am going to pick boat up and check timing again myself just to see where it is at.
anything else i should check?
thanks
Tracy
