Does anyone have a general idea about the maximum compression ratio that you can run using 87 octane fuel in a carburated 302 running a stock marine cam and stock marine timing?

Anything higher than 8.5-9 would require a timing adjustment.

Re: Compression ratio vs Fuel grade?

Thanks guys. My options were either 8.6 or 9.2. I think I settled on 9.2.

Something I learned is that with higher lift cams with a lot of overlap (non-marine) you can run higher compressions with lower octane fuel. Minimal overlap increases cylinder pressure hence more detonation with higher compression. However, to counter, a stroked motor increases the fuel burn time during the dwell at tdc which allows for higher compression before detonation would occur.

Considering my original 302 has 7.9 compression. 9.2 in my new 331 stroker ought to be a virtual rocketship.
