Hi there,

I am trying to figure out what to do this winter. Rebuild, buy new or do nothing with my outboard.

A few years ago my mechanic shows my compression readings are in the mid 90's. All between 93 -98%. On an engine this old should I be concerned? What type of issues might I see with compression readings in this range?

Anyone had a tower rebuilt? What was the approx. cost and do you feel it was worth it?

Appreciate your input.

What's wrong with it? Those comp numbers sound low but all within 10% of each other so I'd say they are ok. Maybe the guy's gauge reads low?

It is likely the gauge is inaccurate. A standard cylinder will be 120PSI or so. Since all your cylinders are very close, it is likely that are 120PSI or so.

Yep,as long as they're within 10%,youre good.guages vary a lot.If you had major engine issues, you would see 1 or 2 cylinders reading much lower than the others. So if youre having power loss issues or other running problems,Post em!Get her purring this winter,or maybe even sooner! If youre just looking for something to do this winter, you can pull,clean/rebuild carbs.Boats LOVE good, clean carbs!Or,better yet,you can come do mine!!!!!
