Compression checked cold: 78, 78, 78 75 pounds per cylinder. Is this a tired motor ineed of work , or will it run satisfactory, decent or poor?

That seems low, Alws, but they are all close, which means the readings may be the result of the guage or technique.

If it were mine I would say that compression is slightly suspect but not a problem.

They ran the motor last November or December. It ran fine and revved up without any hesitation.

Why not try a decarb Alws and then retry the compression test? Although it "might be" just a tired engine, can't hurt...... :)

Thanks for the replies fellas.......I'd like to buy this motor....I'll have to drive 1000 miles round trip...I guess if I have a couple Jim Beam's and sleep on it the feeling might go away....aarrrgghhh!

Those are stout engines, but you are aware of the legendary fuel consumption right?
Just makin' sure. :)

Do not drive a 1000 miles, I have been offered these engine's for free, and turned them down. That engine is so outdated, it should not even be a consideration. There is hardly an engine out there in it's horsepower class that won't out perform it, and with alot less troble, and exspense. That engine should be classified as an antigue, and even old by that standard.

well the fat 50's are pretty rare , and some folks like them. they are pretty unique looking. anyway 75 is OK, I had a v-75 that had 75psi across the board and ran great..

I talked to a couple of BRP techs at the Miami Boat Show about decarbing older engines. They advised against it as it can cause seals to leak. Especially avoid the long soaks as some will recommend. They did encourage the use of Ring Free or other like fuel additive.

Not OMCs finest hour.

In it's day, the back-to-back comparison between the Fat50s & the same era Merc (44ci four was 45hp then?) must have been brutal.

You can easily put the Merc on the transom yourself, and the 44s have that wailing upper midrange. The Fat50 just looks like a big old ox. I do like the 4 fake 'spaceship' exhaust pipes on the 1958 Johnson though.
