Commander 302 issues

I have a commander 302 but it might as well be a Mercruiser most of the parts on it are identical to a Mercruiser. I'm having an issue with my ignition systems it's an old points ignition and for some reason a brand new ballast resistor over heated and split right in two, what would cause this issue? Faulty wiring or just a defective resistor? There is a new ignition coil a new solenoid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It may be nothing more than a defective ballast resistor, Mercruiser doesn't use them, they used resistor wires.
When you get it replaced and running, check the voltage going to the resistor.

What would be the correct voltage going through the resistor?

I didn't say anything about "Through" the resistor, what is the voltage going TO the resistor, from the ignition switch, with the engine running.
