Putting new water pump on 1977, 35 hp Evinrude, model 35752. Pictured below is the original impeller. It obviously doesn't know whether it's coming or going.

I have a couple of questions. First, there appeared to be no sealer/gasket between the lower unit and mid-section. Is this correct?

Second, there appeared to be no sealer/gasket between the water pump housing and the mating surface. Is this correct?

Any suggestions about how to get that stupid bolt back through that little hole into the shift-rod clamp?

Thanks in advance for any help.

That impeller certainly has taken a set! That could have happened when you where taking it apart. Use sealer under the stainless impeller plate. OMC gaskit seal.

Re: Coming or going

The impeller looks like someone turned motor back and forth and left it afterwards. Never turn those motors back, can ruin impeller.

Putting the bolt back is usually no problem, Just put it on the tip of a screwdriver of proper size or a socket and tinker a bit with it.

No sealer in either of the places you mention. I have a pair of magic fingers to get that bolt in. One of those tools that that kinda looks like a syringe, but there's a cable with fingers inside that come out and grab small things.

Re: Coming or going

Thanks for the replies. After I posted, I went to NAPA to get/order the impeller. THEY WERE CLOSED. Whoever heard of an auto parts closing at 5:30PM on Saturday. Oh well, I'll get in Monday.

boatbouy
buy the complete kit. its a few coins more but worth it.
another pointer. when you go to install the shift dissconnect bolt be extremly careful to make sure the radius in the shift rod is completely lined up with the hole in the block. that block is about 20 dollars now and if the radius is off and you thread it anyway you can strip the bolt thread and the block thread, also check the top of the shift rod for burrs and dress any found.the only pump numbers my old books go to is a factory 389980. this kit will update it to a plastic housing and stainless cup arrangement.also test yourt-stat.
good luck and keep posting.and dont flame me I am just the water boy :)

Re: Coming or going

I have searched 5 sites, including the Sierra website, and I cannot find a waterpump kit, only the impeller. It looks like Sierra doesn't make one. Is there an OMC kit that would only be available through a dealer?

Also, after doing searches on this site, I find numerous messages warning folks to not let the impeller key fall out and losing it. I have just the opposite problem. My key is firmly stuck in the slot of the driveshaft. Is there some trick to getting it out?

Also, can the driveshaft be pulled out of the gearcase without dis-assemblying to re-insert it? Would make working on this stuck key much easier.

as for the stupid bolt I have cussed one myself (mine was a screw) I took some painters tape cut a small hole in it slid the screw through it taping the screw to the screw driver that was the easiest way I could find.

Re: Coming or going

Thought I'd get back to everyone on this. Thank-you everyone who responded. I got it back together earlier this week. I haven't fired it up yet as I still have some other work to do on it plus the weather quit cooperating. I hope I got everything connected correctly - shift, water tube, etc. Again, thanks all.
