I am fishing a late season bass tourney tomorrow and was wondering if you guys have any good cold weather tips. I have been fishing deep drop offs with jigs every weekend as of late and have had marginal success. Water temps are in the low to mid 50's. With all the rain the water is high and stained almost like chocolate milk.

If your tips help me win I will buy ya a beer next time I see ya,,, honest.

Hey Flahthead

we have been doing some late bass fishing here too, what we have had most success with beleive it or not is slowing way down some crankbaits, spinnerbaits, off deep drop offs, and also slow jigging pig and jigs, using larger pork or frog trailers to slow the fall, and also still having some luck on Eakins jig and craws. keep a good feel on the line as alot of the strikes we have been getting have been on the fall. Fishing bluffs, and ledges where there is shallow water close to deep water. Good luck on the tourney, gonna be close to 60 tomorrow and gonna go back and try again tomorrow myself.

Matt

Use a craw with a trailer and let it slide across the bottom when you think you are slow enough slow down some more. Those big ones won't chase them far but you invade their territory and they will hit it The color should be brown to light brown with maybe a hint of green. Have been having some good sucess down here in tenn with just about the same conditions.

Re: Cold weather bass

Good info. Thanks guys I will definitely try all that was mentioned. I have to agree on the brown jig. My last couple of bass have come on 3/4 ounce brown Johnson's jigs with a bass stalker pumpkin pepper craw. Bubbakat I will rig one or two with a bit of green skirt material added.

Re: Cold weather bass

Well I fished the tourney. It was cold and really windy, could not hold postion at all. The bite was off and only one boat brought fish to the scales.

Normally I would not even post the results of a tourney I fish but I thought you guys would like to see the winner. His name is Ryann and it was the first time he fished the lake out of a boat. He was with his dad. I was glad to see a young angler walk away with the money.

This is one happy kid. It was just as satisfying to see the young guy win then if I had won myself. :)

The smallie went 3.2 pounds and the largemouth were about 4 pounds each.
Re: Cold weather bass

flahthead,

Boy do I know the feeling, the same weather you were enjoying went through here Friday. :(
Man did it turn the fish off, we went Sunday and the weather was beautiful for the last day of November, but the fish were having none of it, the water temp at our local honeyhole has turned all the waydown to 45 degrees at the surface, and that generally puts the end to the years fishing, its also the temp I look for in the spring to start fishing, so its off to bigger lakes to fish or just put the rods up and take it easy. THose are some good looking fish though.

Matt
