I've seen several recommendations. I understand how the enricher valve works.

One recommendation was to push the throttle lever all of the way forward, turn the switch on, activate the enricher valve for about 6 seconds and keep it activated while engaging the starter. Sometimes that procedure works well and sometimes it doesn't.

My 84 90hp mercury inline 6 had the squirt primer not an enricher valve. So when I pushed the key in on the controls when it was in the run position, it would give it a squirt of gas. So my procedure was throttle forward in neutral, give it 4 or so squirts of gas then start cranking it. Holding in the primer button would do nothing other than give it that initial squirt of fuel.

Give it a couple more shots of the enricher before trying to start it and hold the enricher in as it is started. You might have to hit the enricher again if the motor wants to die after it is started. JMO

If I push the key in to activate the enricher for 6 seconds does gas flow the entire 6 seconds or do I have to press it several times?

The gas will floe only till the pressure from pumping the bulb up is gone, unless the motor is being started and turnning over, and the fuel pump is working.

When you activate the enrichner valve on this engine, you are gravity draining fuel from the upper carb into the some of the lower transfer passages, creating a richer mixture which will hopefully ignite more easily.

Thanks. I pushed the key in 3 times and it started within 3 seconds today.

Thanks for the information.

My best advice is to get a BIGGGG battery. These motors can be very contrary to start. Get it right the first try or be prepared to be there for a while. Hot starts are my biggest problem. If things are right it starts with just a touch, do something wrong and it may never start. Good luck!

Sometimes I have to fast idle while starting on hot starts. The dealer stated it is a common issue on older engines. If the motor sits 10-15 min. I usually don't have to fast idle while starting.

If your cold starting an 84 IL 6 inside of 30 seconds, you don't have a problem.
Your procedure is right.Pump ball firm, key on and push 5/6 seconds then start with open throttle.(dont need to hold key in while starting).

Thanks.

If I start it daily it starts within 5 seconds and within 30 seconds if I start it weekly.

Every spring it always takes longer the first time.

so on these motors when you push the key in that sends a pump of gas? because i have the same starting problem when it is hot but i also have a deal where when i give it gas to go faster i have to push the key or it will sputter and die but when i push the button it goes ahead and revs up to speed.
