turning key got nothing-
Screwdriver shorting out starter/solenoid - starts up OK.
If I shut down, then quick turn the key, she starts.
In the morning, cold, she starts fine... Solenoid?

Next time, feel the connections at the battery and engine/solenoid. See if you can isolate the resistance. Could be your battery cables are corroded where you can't see it.

What motor and how old is the solenoid. If it is an omc old ford solenoid you might try this. Some people might think this is crazy but I have done this on a Saturday when no part were available until Tuesday and I wanted to go fishing. I would take the old solenoid and drilled out the rivets. Taken it apart and cleaned it on a wire wheel and put it back together with a nut and bolt. You can spin the brass plate that makes the connection so the connection is on the clean ends. Now when I say old ford solenoid I mean it looks like and functions the same as the marine grade minus the gasket that keeps you from blowing your cowling fifty feet the air.
