Mercruiser 305 year 1989
Ran the boat for about 20 min under power. Stopped for about 10 minutes, tried to start up engine but would not turn over. The engine cranked but nothing else. Tried starting it with trottle full open , noticed alittle vapor come out of carb. , I assume it was getting gas (not positive). I thought the engine was alittle hot but temp gauge was normal.
End up meeting Sea Tow.
Went to boat today, checked out the circut breaker, that was fine.
Cranked the engine and it started right up. The engine temp again was fine, the only thing I noticed was that the oil pressure seemed higher than normal 60-70 .
I made by way back to my slip and the engine cut out. I was able to restart only to have it cut out on me. Mostly the stall occured when going into idle or reverse. I rasied the idle alittle but it then cut out again backing into slip.
Once docked I tried to start it again but nothing.
I may have a defective temp guage- but no signs of over heating.(I have a closed water system), or I am thinking the fuel pump is going. My manual says its equiped with a sight tube which will give evidence of a ruptured pump diaphragm. I didn't notice this yet, I think the hoses are all black anyway and nothing visable.
If it is the water pump, why would it start?
Any ideas to this post would be appreciated.

It's time to start doing some serious checking. The first thing to do is pull the spark plugs and check for any water in the cylinder. If you have water, it's time to get some work done ASAP before you loose your engine.
If there isn't any water in the cylinders, how about in the fuel filter/water seperator? you do have one don't you????
When was the last time it was tuned up? Those points and plugs, cap and rotor don't last forever ya know.

All of the above advise is good advice. I am going to assume that this is a sterndrive, and since you mentioned that it was stalling when shifting, I am going to suggest that you also check the shift interupt switch and shift cable.
The shift interupt switch (usually mounted on the starboard exhaust elbow)should momentarily engage when shifting in and out of gear, if it is mechanically sticking you whill have no spark untill it returns to the center position. This could also be caused by a worn out shift cable.

The boat was turned up beginning of season. Someone else mention about the shift interupt as well. Not sure exactly what the switch looks like. My manual shows a shift cutout switch roller located under the throttle arm. I'll have to look near exhaust elbow, but not exactly sure what I am looking for.
Thanks

Take a look in the FAQ forum, there is a section on the shift interupt.

Aldo
