cold start advance on tldi

I have a 2003 70 hp tldi which has lately becoming very hard to start cold.
It will crank over and fire for a split second - repeatedly. I suspected fuel problems but fuel and air rail pressures are right at spec.
Since it's fuel injected I assumed that there is some sort of cold start system such as a valve to inject a richer mixture, etc. However, I was told that Nissan uses a timing advance for cold start and I am wondering if anyone has had experience checking and/or adjusting this.

If this were in our shop, we would read all codes out of the ECU. There may be a problem with the WTS, TPS, or it could be another issue. What is the precise model and serial number?

You need a service manual to see how to put the engine into it's self diagnostic mode and then you need a service manual to interpet what the codes mean. So, in conclusion, you need a service manual to go any further.
