Coil tower?

I'm trying to diagnose a problem with my 1981 Mercury 25 outboard engine. In the service manual the process to troubleshoot the coil says to check the resistance between the + and - terminals, which I understand.

It then says to check between the coil tower and the + or - terminal. What is the coil tower? The coils are mounted on top of the engine block and the coils are coated in some type of non-conductive plastic, so I can't check resistance between the coil body and the terminals. Needless to say this portion of the test is not going well....

Any help?

Thanks

The coil tower is the part that the spark splug wire plugs into.

Thank you. That helps a lot. I checked the coils per the manual and one was not in spec.
