Question, If my resistor wire from alt to + coil is bad can I run a internal ballast coil and run new wire for coil/Alt to replace resistor wire?
1988 OMC king cobra 460. I have OEM book!
PS: I accidently had the AC pole (choke)hooked up to the red/pur wire (resistor wire)
and the purp/wht hooked up to the EXC pole on altenator. So I think I burned resistor wire up when I started motor.

Now motor starts but dies in run or on position (no voltage to the + of coil in the run position).
Thanks Paul

Re: Coil resistor wire

i actually had a very very simialar problem. mine motor would start and i could tell it was running but when i moved the key from the start position to the run position it would shut back off. turned out it the resistor wire and actually melted thru and was shorting to the block. the resisitor wire is pretty long and is run in the wire harness all over the place. evidently it has to be a certain length to work cuz it was run from the left side of my engine to around the back of the motor (where teh short was) then to the right side of the engine then looped back all the way to the left side of the engine and to the coil. Perhaps its a simple problem like i had that was just hard to spot. i acually heard the wire spark when i would short. and thats how i found it.

Good Luck!
