Coil Leakage

1981 Johnson 70 hp outboard. I've noticed the coils look like the epoxy like stuff that surrounds the coil appears to be melting or leaking. The motor still seems to run ok at this point, but I was wondering if this is something that indicates the coil is about to go bad. I haven't tested them yet as the motor still runs good, but I was just wondering if I need to get ready to start replacing them? Thanks for your help.

Coils that have the sealer leaking out are running too hot, maybe using a none resistor coil in a place where it needs a resistor coil or reversed. Is there any liquid coming out? If so I'd look at replacing them, just be sure you get the proper coil for the application.

Thanks, no liquid coming out, just that epoxy looking stuff has run down the coil in several spots.

If the motor has been overheated will cause that. Can also be old coils starting to break down.

I suspect you need to be looking for some replacement coils now. They may still be working, but when you least expect it or want it, they will leave you stranded. It actually sounds like your engine is running too hot and you should look in to that issue as well. JMHO

^^agree. Add that if the coil assemblies are breaking down for whatever reasons, I would replace them (hang onto the old ones as spares.)
