Hi folks,
I bought this motor last summer along with a 64 mfg niagra. The boat/motor had sat outside under a tarp for 10 years. A local 'old time' mechanic got it running after installing new carb kit, ignition kit (breaker/points and condenser only) and the diaphragm on the fuel pump. I replaced the impeller and gaskets.
I had it out a few times this summer and though it seemed to run well- could detect a consistent slight & very transitory drop in power at near WOT. I wondered if it was the fuel pump- the fuel 'bowl' didn't maintain a constant level of gas- though it never 'emptied'. Then the other day the motor just cut out after about 20 minutes at planing near WOT - plenty of new gas/oil (50:1). Gas line seemed ok. Starter would turn over- but no firing. I didn't try the manual pull.
When I got it home, there was no visible spark in any of the four plugs (used a spark tester in a darkened garage) and so removed the magneto to investigate further..the points and condenser were new last fall. When I took off the distributor cap there was ALOT of rust colored dust. I removed the coil to inspect-although the structure was intact, the lead wires had some fraying/wiring exposed and again- some rust-colored dust around the outside of the coil- on the laminated structures. Can't get any capacity reading between the spark button and the positive or negative leads. I ordered a replacemnt coil and rotor but in the meantime am wondering if there is anything I should do about the remaining rust inside the magneto.
I blew out what dust I could with some pressurized air. Should I use naval jelly or something else to remove remaining 'rust' or just let it be.
