Not new, but my first post in 14 years. I have a 1990 Four Winns 180 with a 5.0l HO Ford and a Cobra drive. We've had it 26 years and it doesn't have a ton of use. It's been pretty much trouble free- I got rid of the points and put a Pertronix in way back, did bellows and a gimbal bearing and I think a shift cable, but I'm not sure. After the kids were grown I was thinking about selling it due to lack of use but we retired in an area with nice lakes all around and we use it a lot now.
So much for the background. My question has to do with the L shaped shift detent that OMC supposedly upgraded I think after mine was built in 1990. It's gotten harder to shift and in the fall I'm going to replace the shift cable and whatever else I see that it needs. Is it worthwhile to change the detent when I do the rest of this? If there's a huge difference I might be tempted to do it. I have never seen water or metal in the outdrive oil when I changed it so there's probably no reason to go into the lower unit but I wanted to hear from someone who has done it.
Thanks for the help
Dan
