Re: cobra outdrive

There have been some problems with the cobra drive requiring gearsets to be replaced, but parts are readily available. Check to see if the shift cable has been updated, if it has it should be red and not black. Also check out Stuart's cobra site, I don't have the address handy, but I know that someone will post it for you!

Cobra's are good despite all the bad press, sometimes a little trickier to find a good OMC mechanic but lot's of good help here on this board (plus a few others) here is the URL for Stuart's page Stuart's Cobra Page

I agree. Cobra's got a bad rep from their early iterations that had shift problems that were ultimately remedied. Most gearset problems can be attributed to incorrect setup, or incorrect maintenance. My 17 year old Cobra was just rebuilt and needed nothing more than seals and a new shift cable. We did replace some parts that were questionable as to whether they'd cause issues before the next maintenance, but even that was due to water damage from the bad seals. I'd have no qualms getting another Cobra unit. Mercruiser too has their issues.

-Roger

Re: cobra outdrive

Hello
other than some minor problems with shift cables and some esa modules the cobra drive was a good one
I have several crabbers that ran the cobra for 11 years on 25 parkers with no real failures. the only problem we encountered that volvo tried to fix is the lower gimbal ring pin would rotate and wallow out. its an easy fix to set screw the pin to the shoe.follow the advice of the above posts and things should work out well.
good luck and keep us posted
