I have a 87 cobra 3.0l the upper unit lost a bearing so I'm having the upper fixed and am concered the lower unit is damaged as well. The question is when I rotate the drive shaft it feels notchy (feels the same no mater if its in forward neutral or reverse it doesnt hang or feel like a bad bearing infact if I didnt know any better I would think this was normal. Does any one have a low unit off that they can turn the shaft and see if this is common. Thank you all for your fast reply's and willingness to help.

Re: cobra lower unit

a teardown and inspection of the cobra lower is mandatory after any upper failures. metal seems to obey the laws of gravity and as the chips fall they tend to fall into the lower though the rather large opening between the upper and lower.
if you have the upper and lower seperated and turn the drive shft it may feel notchy due the the drive shaft position. it tends to follow gravity as well.
without feeling it myself I cant tell you its normal or not. I can tell you a teardown and careful inspection is higly reccomended.
