I am having trouble figuring out the steering on a 98 cobia 174cc with a Yamaha 80hp outboard. It appears to be a hydrolic system but I cannot get the steering wheel to move, is there some hidden lock on it? Or am I having system problems?

Re: COBIA STEERING TROUBLES

Welcome to iboats. :)

It's probably single cable steering. The cable is probably rusted inside, or maybe frozen water is holding things up. It could be the ram inside the tilt tube, and in rare cases it can be the swivel on the motor. There are basically two types of that kind of steering plus 3 or 4 different manufacturers. Rotary and flat rack. You'll need to know which type and system manufacturer as well as the length. Wander on up here... Steering

Re: COBIA STEERING TROUBLES

I have a rack and pinion system manufactured by Morse/Teleflex. It is not HYDRAULIC steering; no pump, pressure lines and all that.

It took 2 hands to turn the wheel. I removed the cable and found it bound at both ends.

A new cable solved the problem to the point where I could now turn with one finger what had taken 2 hands to turn before.

Mark
