Scene: a West of Scotland beach in November. A Force Six, occ Seven Easterly wind is blowing and the sea is moderate occ rough.
We get a call saying that two windsurfers are in difficulties (hmmm, wonder why?)

We attend the scene and find that one windsurfer has managed to scramble to rocks and we set up some equipment and rescue him but we can't see his buddy anywhere. We task the local SAR helo to launch and assist in the search. Within about twenty minutes the helo finds the windsurfer over ten miles out and clinging to his board suffering from hypothermia. They winch him aboard and fly him direct to the local hospital where he makes a full recovery but...........

......two weeks later a bill arrives at the helo squadron for the cost of replacing his windsurfer board which they had left drifting at sea  (approx £700 or US$1,260)!!!!

The commanding officer of the squadron then types out a counter-bill for the cost of the rescue: £11,800 or US$21,240 (including a small discount because they were already airborne!)

needless to say he dropped the claim and gave a donation to a nominated charity :D

Scene Two: Isle of Arran, Scotland.
I am tasked to train some part-time Coastguards in using the breeches bouy equipment. This involves using a 41mm rocket to fire a floating line to the "ship" that we are assisting. In the training we go to a field and decide to use some trees as the "ship" so that I can demonstrate the best way to avoid problems with rigging etc.

Everything goes great, safety is priority number one and all the guys are keen and eager to learn. I show them how to load the 41mm rocket launcher and the safety precautions to take and then fire the first rocket (approx 12-14" long and around 8lbs in weight) over the treetops......then we heard a very loud clatter.
One of the guys goes running off to check and discovers that there is a small house behind the trees and I've just shot the line onto the roof! The two occupants are looking up at the sky wondering if aliens are landing
You've never seen a Coastguard team load gear up and drive off so quick in all your lives :D :D

Army at Fort Sill fired artillery round into Father-in-laws barn. Oops, they did pay for the barn. Your stories are great keep them coming.

Here's one for you in the same vein.

When I was a kid we were out on my dad's sailing boat in convoy with one of my father's friends boats in the Solent. It was dead calm so we were motoring along at about 5 knots. My dad's friend's son (aged about 12) got out an air rifle and started shooting pellets at dandelion fairies that were floating around.

A Royal Navy destroyer came up from astern and as it was passing the kid with the air rifle took a closer look at it through the scopes of the little air rifle he had.

The destroyer's main turret came round and the gun barrel dropped til it was pointing directly at them.

The captain's voice came over the tannoy...

"I've got a bigger one than you"....

Ya know while I was stationed at Sill I got to see a couple of cows get splattered and a few other pieces of property go boom! but you got to learn some where I guess. There were some great bass ponds out in the ranges though, you just had to know when they weren't shooting to go fishing :D

Bro,

Sorry to hijack, but I absolutely love Cumbria. I spent two years between here and the UK. Kind of lived in Leyland, but I would usually head to the Lakes for weekends. Cusotmer in Carlisle, so I poked around up there too. Where did all of the powerboats on Windermere end up? Pretty crappy deal if you ask me. Waterski schools, clubs etc. Do the locals (you) think this was a good idea?

worked with a guy that was from Germany - him and his brothers would find old shells etc laying around and build a fire around them and go hide.

One day one the shells came roaring into the hill they were hiding behind - he said they were shaking they were so scared...

tomatolord

quietcat: yeah Cumbria is lovely, and even although I'm Scottish and being "forced" to live in England :D the scenery here makes it worth while.
The power boats from Windermere have disappeared due to the stupid speed restrictions; some reports say tourist income is down 30% this year. All the Lakes now have the same stupid restriction and the real knock on effect is that boat prices are severely weakened in this area: I'm seeing some excellent deals on boats at the moment: in some cases almost giveaway prices!
