I have to purchase a ton of batteries for my boats, probably about 5-6. Can I use automotive ones with marine adaptor terminals? I can get group 65 (2nds) for a killer deal. They usually have crooked or missing decals, or maybe tipped over and spilled, etc...

Will this fly with the CG, or will they be requiring marine rated batteries.

As far as I can tell, the only things that make a battery "marine" these days are:
  • Vent caps that can be popped to top off water (i.e., not maintenance-free like in all cars these days) in the case of wet cell batteries
  • Elevated pricing for all types

You left out - much shorter warranty ;)

  • Wouldn't even say that is much of a factor. Lots of marine sealed batteries, as well as plenty of cheap car batteries that have removable covers.

Marine batteries are generally built to take the constant vibration they are subjected to. Car batteries generally have a "soft life" compare to a marine battery.

At least that is what the mfr's would like you to believe. It would be interesting to tear one apart to see if there is any real difference in construction. Call me a skeptic. But I used to sell batteries, and saw the truck delivering them.

The USCG would only be interested in your battery hold down.

Shouldn't be a problem so long as they are properly held down, go for it.
