It has just been announced here in Dubai that ALL vessels whatever size must have transponders fitted by next registration renewal which is every 12 months.

Apparently, the marine authority fit these units which are military units with a large 1 metre antenna as thick as a broomstick.
The authority fit these themselves and will put the antenna where they want  and charge Dhs 7000 ($1900) for the privilege.(I am also told that Emiratis (Nationals) can have them fitted for free).

What are the regulations where you are?
The cost sounds extortionate to me.

Re: Coast Guard Transponders

You piqued my curiosity so I did some looking around. The idea has been kicked around in the US for several years, but doesn't appear to have taken hold, at least not yet.

I think the sheer numbers of boats here make it impractical, which is not to say that government won't someday require it anyway.

I feel your pain. :(

sounds like the "authority" has a connection with the contractor who imports/sells/installs these. Absurd.
Your Coast Guard" isn't going to be real happy when they all start going off on the small boats.

I assume you mean an AIS (Automatic Information System) transponder.

AIS is an extension of the DSC system and radar. The AIS transceiver allows you to receive AIS target data as well as transmit your own vessel information to other AIS receivers in your area. AIS aids in collision avoidance by helping you track and contact anyone in the area with an MMSI number.

An AIS transceiver sends the following data every 2 to 10 seconds depending on a vessel's speed while underway, and every 3 minutes while a vessel is at anchor:

The vessel's Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI)

Navigation status ? "at anchor", "under way using engine(s)", "not under command", etc.

Rate of turn ? right or left, from 0 to 720 degrees per minute

Speed over ground ? 0.1-knot (0.19 km/h) resolution from 0 to 102 knots (189 km/h)

At present it's only required for commercial and for hire operations in the US but is gaining in popularity with recreational vessels as well.
My Garmin 4208 came AIS receive ready. The black box to add send capabilities runs $1,400

Keep in mind that Dubai has been undergoing massive commercial development for a number of years. They are essentially building one of the largest tourism based infrastructures in the world. They are going to be the Middle-Eastern Riviera very shortly if not already. They are building man made islands to place a massive series of resorts and a large number of marinas to cater to world cruisers, mega-yachts, etc.

this is a logical step from both a security and safety perspective for a country that is trying to develop marine based tourism.

the problem is overkill. requiring a $1,900 tracking device on a $500 jon boat is absurd, but typical. "If it ain't broke, fix it until it is."

I just hope our administration doesn't get wind of this.

Probably not a lot of $500 john boats running in the Arabian Sea or Gulf of Oman. UAE/Dubai is the banking center of the middle east. This is the Camin Islands/Switzerland of the middle eastern oil.
