Closed cooled 93 Merc 5.7 Bravo II. I am replacing manifolds, 3 inch spacers, and elbows on my engine. Checked the manual, and it states to place the block-off gasket on top of the manifold at the bottom of the spacers, and route the coolant return hoses from the upper port in the manifold. The 3-inch spacers will be raw water cooled in this setup.
However, on my engine (and I believe it is an original factory installation) the block off gaskets were put on top of the spacers, at the bottom of the elbows, and coolant return hoses were connected to the ports in the fresh water cooled spacers. It never got me any trouble, the engine never overheated.
So... which is the right way to do it? Any opinions will be greatly appreciated.
