Over the weekend we visited the in-laws, I did some fishing in the morning while my wife went to her aunt's house on the river. She called to inform me that her aunt's boat had not been summarized and wondered if I could tell her how to do it over the phone. I knew I would only be an hour until I got there so I told her I would do it when I arrive. In the meantime her father stops by the aunt's house and decides that he would summerize it, he does so and it does not start. I get another call informing me that it would not start so I tell them I am on my way just to wait a couple minutes. When I arrive I find the starter is not engaging, we get another one and I install it and it fires right up. I ask my father in-law what all he did to summerize it, he is pretty handy and has owned boats longer than I have been alive so I trust his work (big mistake). I lower the boat and take it to the end of the slough, 2 min in an alarm starts beeping. I shut it down quickly thinking its overheating, lift the engine hatch and water is to the middle of the oil pan! I hollar at the dock for them to get the lift ready and I fire it back up and haul *** to the lift. After a beer and 1 hour of the bildge running I inspect. The lower hose to the circulator pump was not re-attached! Close call and I hope it's my only one this year!

I'd say that was quick thinking and action by a cool level headed, experienced Captain. I hope everyone on-shore learned a valuable lesson. Next time, wait for you to de-winterize the boat !!! :) Glad it all worked out.

Re: Close Call...

stories like that make me love my outboard even more. A giant engine pumping water into the boat! Yikes!

I'd say time to start the "trust but verify" for your FIL. I bet that mistake never happens again to either of you.

Bah, humbug on the outboards, BTW. They run strong but they don't sound tough enough for me, I love that inboard, smooth, low idling American motor sound & feel. Plus the weight of it gets me some ride quality. I guess it's "to each his own".
I know some of you outboard guys can just wave as you pass me. You'll need some real ooomph though. Takes a real big eggbeater or a teeny boat to hit those speeds.
