Howdy everyone. I've got a quick question.

I have a friend w/ a Clinton 9.9 short shaft tiller, he wants 275 for it. I don't know the year, but obviously it's an older model.

Are the Clinton outboards decent and reliable?

Will a 9.9 be sufficient in getting me across the lake in my 16ft Alumicraft semi V?

I have a Johnson 25 horse that I'm having problems getting running and would like to get something possibly temporary just to cruise around it and use the boat the rest of the summer and then to have as a back up if needed.

What are you thoughts?

Re: Clinton 9.9

Never heard of a Clinton 9.9.They did make a Model K900 9hp.
Do some research you may find it is an Eska. They made a 2 cylinder
watercooled 9.9 and 15.
I would run screaming in the opposite direction. You might find a not pretty, good running E/J 5,5.5 or 7.5 If you have a bare bones 16ft even the 5 hp
might plane 10 or 12 mph lightly loaded with an extension tiller so you can sit in the middle seat.2 150lb guys and light gear might get 8 or 9 mph.
And the plus is there is a vast supply of new and used parts.dating back to the early 50s.Not like the Clinton, Eska motors with few parts and venders.
What problems are you having with the 25?

Thanks for the info on the clintons.

As for the Johnson RD-14 25 horse (1953). I've rebuilt the carb, checked out the (recently replaced) points and condensors, new plugs and replaced the gear lube. As well as a few other odds and ends. It has good spark that will jump a 3/8" gap on a spark checker. It seems to be getting fuel into the cylinder, but I'll be damned if I can get it started. I've even gone as far as trying some ether, but nothing. I get a "pop" once in awhile and thats it.

My arm is getting a hell of a workout trying to pull start this thing and I've just about had enough of it. I've talked to a buddy of mine who knows points style ignition better than me and I've had multiple questions up here and still can't think of anything else that I've already done.

I just found a 25 hp evinrude (1976) in our local craigslist for 750 that I'd like to try and get, now I just gotta come up w/ 750, LOL

Did you torque the flywheel nut to 60-65 ft lbs?
Is the keyway and key in good shape. Double check the flywheel key.
Have you tried fuel in the sparkplug holes?Points set carefully on the highest point of the cam.Too close timing will be late,to open timing will be early.
Are the plugs getting wet?(with gas)or perhaps water?
