clink clink clink..is the sound

My 78 OMC 3.0 has a clinking/rattle/light metallic clinking coming from the bell housing area. seems to be more pronounced on the starter side. it seems to come and go, doesnt do it all time....kinda like a rattle/clink. Anyone care to guess or know what might be in there causing that sound? Sounds kinda like a pulley lightly tapping something metal but comes from the back. Any known issues with this engine that would cause this? The out drive is a model 400.

Have you checked the starter motor? It could be the starter gear vibrating around? If it's the original starter motor, it is probably due for a change!! 78 is getting pretty old.
