Clickity clack

New to me outdrive, changed water pump, a seal, and ujoints at the start of season. Soon after had slight clicking on turns, has gotten worse. Pulled drive today... Yikes. It would appear that one of the clips came loose. Joint was contacting the inner surface of the large retainer nut. Glad I checked it out when I did. Curious as to what the end result would have been if I didn't.

It would appear that one of the clips came loose.

the clips can sometimes flex and lose their spring when installing, also there are different thickness clips, often they are color coded to indicate thickness
